Common Questions

Selling a financed car, answered

On hire purchase or PCP the lender legally owns the car until it is paid off, so it cannot be sold without settling. That does not stop the sale — it just means the settlement has to be paid from the proceeds as part of the transaction, which is exactly how we structure it.
That is negative equity, and it is common on PCP. The sale covers what it can and you pay the shortfall, or in some cases it can be rolled into a new agreement. We will tell you the number before you commit so there are no surprises.
You request it from your lender, or authorise us to. It is valid for a set period, usually around 28 days, and we work to that window so the figure does not go stale mid-sale.
Neither, directly. The settlement is paid to your lender from the sale proceeds on completion, then the balance comes to you. That protects both you and the buyer, because the finance is cleared before ownership transfers.
No. The car is worth what it is worth. Outstanding finance only affects how the money is split at the end, not the price the car achieves.
